To The Census Participants:
The Triple Hill Arts Initiative wants to learn more about Mount Vernon, NY’s arts and cultural
community, its activity, practitioners, attendees, its needs and resources and interests of residents. In
addition to informing the community, school district and new City Hall administration about arts and
culture in the community, the study is designed to serve as a basis for resource development. It will help us understand how arts and culture can improve the quality of life in the community it serves.

Census Project Goals:
In order to learn more about the arts and cultural community key project goals were identified:

• To understand residents’ (both full-time and seasonal) interests in arts and culture;
• To inventory current arts and culture offering s and future plans;
• To evaluate the facilities that house arts and cultural programming; and
• To identify gaps between the residents’ interests, the program offerings and the capacity of
existing facilities to meet current gaps and changing needs in the future.

We are taking a multifaceted data collection approach in order to meet these goals. This approach will
allow the project team to obtain input from multiple stakeholders and to gain an understanding of the arts
and cultural community as a whole.

Methodology:
The data collection approach involves the following five step strategy:

1. Situation Analysis – The Situation Analysis includes a review and examination of past
planning and research efforts in order to provide important contextual information on cultural
and related economic activities in the city. Structured individual interviews shall be
conducted with representative leadership of the various sectors of arts, business, government,
education, and social/human services to gain input and ascertain expectations for the
assessment.

2. Market Analysis/Community Input – A Market Area Analysis will determine the current
resident profile, drawing on demographic and lifestyle data. We want to deepen our
knowledge about current and potential cultural audience

3. Arts Culture Sector Analysis – Two surveys will be conducted in order to asses the needs and
resources of the arts and cultural community. First, a survey of arts and cultural organizations
will be administered to document current activity and future programmatic and facility needs.
A second survey will be administered to individual artists in order to assess the role of artists
and craftspeople living and/or working in the area. Additionally, an inventory of the primary
facilities for arts and culture programming in Mount Vernon will be conducted.

4. Gaps and Opportunities – A summary profile of the arts and culture sector will supplement the
analysis conducted locally and to illustrate opportunities. The overall goal is to provide insight
into Mount Vernon area-based groups in terms of their effectiveness in meeting cultural needs
and interests of area residents.

5. Dissemination – It is important for the Triple Hill Arts Initiative to be able to share the
findings with the community. In addition to a public presentation / announcement of the
findings, THAI plans to include continued dissemination in a variety of ways. By supporting
an ongoing dialogue with its constituents and the arts and cultural community in general, the
Triple Hill Arts Initiative can continue to provide resources and further refine its services.
We appreciate your participation in this project!
